Fluctuating power (and cadence)

Postby reka.burmeister » Tue Feb 15, 2022 10:54 pm

I got my Tuo back at the end of July but work got in the way of my training so I haven’t used it much since (about 20 times). Practically all those times were free rides, not training programs (I’m using Zwift exclusively) so it’s possible that my problem existed from the start, I just didn’t notice: the reported power (and cadence) doesn’t “settle”, it keep fluctuating - about 15-20W on each side of what I presume is the actual value. The same happens with the cadence though the deviation is much less noticeable. I have a cadence sensor on my bike so I have a reasonable idea of what the actual rpm of my pedalling is.

At first I blamed Zwift so I kept using its calibration (also calibrated with the Elite app) to no avail but I did a little ride today using the Elite app’s “level training” and experienced the same issue: speed and cadence appear flat (like I said, the cadence deviation is not so dramatic) on the graphs but the power moves up and down.

I also noticed rather oddly that after finishing my ride, when flipping the overrun lever back to the left so I can remove my bike from the trainer there is a sizeable gap (about 7mm) between my tyre and the elastogel - which was just touching when I started, as per instructions. Could this be related?

I’m quite disappointed with this experience as I wanted to upgrade my TacX to what seemed like a pricer and more accurate big brother (after I was having issues with that one) but it would seem I have to switch back to it now (TacX replaced the faulty resistance unit) as I definitely can’t complete training sessions like this - especially as the reading seems to be quite inaccurate at times (based on the level of actual effort it requires me to try and maintain my target cadence)
