Direto - Skipping every other pedal stroke

Hello,

I recently received the Direto and installed everything as per the user manual. I'm using a 11 speed cassette and didn't add any spacers. The problem I'm running into is that I get a sort of skipping sound/feeling every other pedal stroke, like the chains going to come off the front ring. The chain has never fallen off or shifted without me using the shifters, but it's become annoying.

I thought maybe it was due to the height difference between the front and rear wheels, so I added an extra book under the front wheel and that seemed to mitigate the skipping in the higher gears, but it still remains in the lower gears. Please let me know if there's something I can do to fix this.
