Direto - ERG mode working in training sessions but resistance not right on open rides

Had my direto for about 6 months using it on Zwift with no problems.

In the last week however I've noticed that it offers no resistance when doing a normal ride in zwift. If I'm doing a specific training ride the ERG mode seems to work ok. But in a normal ride around the zwift routes something is definitely off.

For example I can spin up 10% inclines in my hardest gear ratio whereas I should really be dropping way down the gears. Basically I can ride entire routes in the hardest gear combo without ever changing gear.

I've checked that I have the latest firmware and I do
I've tried using my iPad and Android phone but the problem exists in both
I've done a calibration in the elite app
I've tried unpairing and repairing the trainer in Zwift but it didn't help

I've checked what sensors the elite app can find and it can't find the power sensor. Cadence sensor is found as is the CSC sensor but the app won't find the power sensor. I'm suspecting that is the problem???

Any solutions? I can find lots of reports of problems with this trainer but no obvious solutions
