Clunk when riding out of the saddle

If I stand up out of the saddle to go up a hill it's like the training can't keep up or react fast enough to my sudden increase in power. I have to back way off and wait for it to catch up or I get a series of little resistance followed by clunk when it catches up. This has been happening since new.
